Why GMAT Quant Is Less Complex Than You Think

Most of the fear around GMAT Quant comes from two stories people tell themselves: "I'm not good at math" and "I didn't study a STEM degree." Neither one holds up once you see what a Quant question actually asks of you.

Two Fears That Do Not Hold Up

Both of these beliefs feel true in the moment. Neither one explains why people improve so quickly once they change how they approach a question.

"I'm not good at math"

Almost all the calculations required in GMAT Quant break down into simple arithmetic, times tables up to 12 by 12, fractions like 1/3 = 0.333, and similar basics. Plenty of people who struggled with math in school perform well on GMAT Quant once they see this.

A STEM background can work against you here. It is common for STEM graduates to run complex calculations they do not need and to skip past a simpler path because they trust their raw computation more than a shortcut.

Solving a GMAT Quant question typically involves 6 to 8 steps: choosing a method, naming things, translating the question information, solving, and calculating.

On its own, T2 = R2 + 7 means nothing. It only makes sense once you connect it back to the question sentence it translates.

From One Solution to the Next Question

Reading a solution and nodding along feels like understanding. What actually carries over to a new question comes down to two habits that are easy to skip.

  • Trace each step back to the question stem. That link shows you where the step came from and when to reach for it again.
  • Ask why each step works. That question is what trains your mind to recognize the same move inside a different question.
  • A future question will always change one or two steps from anything you have seen before. Understanding the individual steps is what lets you adapt when that happens.
