TopicHow we built this dataset
ScopeThe dataset compiles 788 named elective courses across 9 leading full-time MBA programs: Wharton (UPenn) (154), Chicago Booth (130), Harvard Business School (120), INSEAD (88), Stanford GSB (83), MIT Sloan (80), Kellogg (Northwestern) (52), London Business School (41), Columbia Business School (40). The chart, snapshot, and searchable database on this page all reflect this same dataset.
Data sources (three tiers)Each course came from one of three tiers:
  • Web. Courses scraped directly from each school's public electives or course catalog page (HBS, Stanford, Wharton, Booth, INSEAD). These reflect what was publicly listed at the time of collection.
  • PDF. Official course catalog PDFs where available, used for Booth and INSEAD alongside web data. These tend to be more comprehensive but may include courses that are not open to every MBA student.
  • KB. Training knowledge from Claude Sonnet 4.6, used for schools where the above was not available or sufficient (Kellogg, Columbia, LBS, plus supplementary MIT courses). These are based on well-documented public information but may not reflect the most recent course additions.
Category classificationEach course was tagged with one of 11 categories (Finance, Strategy, Marketing, Operations, Entrepreneurship, Analytics/DS, Leadership/People, Ethics/Policy, Sales, Healthcare, Real Estate) using a rules-based classifier operating only on the course name, not on each school's own subject area labels. This keeps classification consistent across schools that use different internal taxonomies.
Caveats
  • Course availability changes year to year.
  • Cross-registration options, for example MIT students taking Sloan courses from other MIT departments, are not reflected.
Last updatedMay 2026. Source links on individual rows in the searchable database below point to the original school catalog page or PDF used.
