Question
If x+1=t and t=3-x, then x=
- -2
- -1
- 0
- 1
- 2
Topics: linear equations, simultaneous equations
Solution
Step 1
We use "Substitution" to replace t with the expression from the first equation in the second equation.
x + 1 = 3 - x
Step 2
We then collect like terms to group the x terms on one side and the constant terms on the other side.
x + 1 + x = 3 2x + 1 = 3
Step 3
We then subtract 1 from both sides and divide by 2 to isolate x.
2x = 2 x = 1
Answer
x = 1
